Is Edaravone the Future of Free Radical Scavenging in Inflammatory States?

چکیده
Page no. 65 Sir, Free radicals in systemic circulation lead to several forms of diseases involving cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and respiratory system. They are highly unstable compounds which lead to oxidative damage to cellular lipids, protein, and DNA. A lot of research has been done to investigate the role of free radicals in several diseases.[1] This has led to the development of free radical scavengers. Free radical scavengers that are arbitrarily used in the practice of anesthesiology and critical care are ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), Vitamin E (beta carotene), alpha tocopherol, omega fatty acids, allopurinol, mannitol, multivitamin infusions, selenium.[2] The failure of free radical model could be because it is introduced quite late during management, especially when the damage has occurred. Another reason could be, the dose has not been described by conducting well‐designed studies.

Beyond neurological disease: new targets for edaravone (Review).
Free radicals play major roles in the pathogenesis of tissue damage in many diseases and clinical conditions, and the removal of free radicals may offer a treatment option. Several modulators of free radical scavenger pathways have been developed and some have progressed to clinical trials. One such agent, edaravone, was approved in 2001 in Japan ...

Edaravone (3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one) has been used as a free radical scavenging drug for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke in Japan since 2001. Edaravone is given to patients intravenously; therefore, it is distributed in the form of an aqueous solution. However, aqueous solutions of edaravone are very unstable because it is present as edaravone anion, which is capable of transf...

The present study was designed to explore the flavonoid contents and the radical scavenging activities of 50% ethanol extracts of leaves, stems, rachis and roots of Dryopteris erythrosora. The total flavonoid contents in various parts were determined as: stems > roots > rachis > leaves. All extracts from different parts of D. erythrosora showed strong bioactivities. The DPPH free radical scaven...

In this study, we measured the composition and free radical scavenging activity of several species of nuts, namely, Torreya grandis, Carya cathayensis, and Myrica rubra. The nut kernels of the aforementioned species are rich in fatty acids, particularly in unsaturated fatty acids, and have 51% oil content.
